Diese Norm beschreibt die Extraktion wasserlöslicher Elemente und Verbindungen in Böden. Die Bedeutung wasserlöslicher Elemente und Verbindungen liegt in ihrer unmittelbaren Verfügbarkeit für physikalische, chemische und biochemische Prozesse in Böden. Die chemische Zusammensetzung der Bodenlösung ist neben dem Gehalt und der Zusammensetzung der löslichen Elemente und Verbindungen auch von der festen Bodenmatrix, insbesondere von Gehalt und Qualität der Tone und des Humus, und vom jeweiligen Wassergehalt des Bodens abhängig. Da die Gewinnung der Bodenlösung bei natürlich auftretenden Wassergehalten schwierig ist, benützt man Extrakte, die höheren als den natürlich auftretenden Wassergehalten entsprechen.
