Wegen der Verpflichtung, ausreichende Mengen an Trinkwasser einwandfreier Qualität bereitzustellen, ist es häufig erforderlich, Wässer aus verschiedenen Gewinnungsanlagen gemeinsam zu verteilen. Da die Wasserbeschaffenheit von den geologischen und biologischen Gegebenheiten des Einzugsgebietes abhängt, kann sich dabei die Notwendigkeit ergeben, auch Wässer unterschiedlicher Zusammensetzung zu nutzen. Daneben kann eine gemeinsame Verteilung auch angestrebt werden, um bestimmte Eigenschaften der Wässer zu verändern.
