Dieser Teil von IEC 60793 gilt für Lichtwellenleiter der Kategorien A1-OM1, A1-OM2, A1-OM3, A1-OM4, A1-OM5 und A1d. Diese Fasern werden in Nachrichtenübertragungseinrichtungen und Lichtwellenleiterkabeln eingesetzt oder können deren Bestandteil sein. Die Kategorien A1-OM2, A1-OM3, A1-OM4 und A1-OM5 gelten für 50/125-µm-Gradientenprofilfasern in vier Bandbreitenklassen. Für jede dieser Bandbreitenklassen sind zwei Stufen des Makrobiegedämpfungsverhaltens festgelegt, die durch Suffix "a" oder "b" gekennzeichnet sind. Kategorien mit dem Suffix "a" genügen den bisher üblichen Stufen des Makrobiegedämpfungsverhaltens. Mit Suffix "b" sind diejenigen Kategorien gekennzeichnet, die verbesserte Stufen des Makrobiegedämpfungsverhaltens (d. h. geringere Dämpfung) aufweisen.
