Diese ÖNORM ist auf Anlagen und Geräte, die zur Desinfektion oder Aufbereitung von Trinkwasser, Betriebswasser, Badewasser und Abwasser mit Chlorgas dienen, anzuwenden. Auf entlegene Kleinanlagen zur Trinkwasseraufbereitung ist diese ÖNORM nur bedingt anwendbar. Chlorungsanlagen für die Dosierung von Chlorverbindungen oder deren Lösungen für die Desinfektion und Oxidation werden in ÖNORM M 5879-2 und solche für die Dosierung von Chlordioxid in ÖNORM M 5879-3 behandelt.
