This standard describes a method for the determination of exchangeable cations and effective cation exchange capacity of soils and the humus layer by extraction with barium chloride solution. The barium chloride solution is unbuffered, so the extraction is carried out at a pH value which is determined primarily by the soil (effective exchange capacity).
