Für die primär für Feuerlöschzwecke zu verwendenden Überflurhydranten wird zwecks Vereinheitlichung eine Typenauswahl getroffen, wobei für die ausgewählten Typen Haupt- und Anschlußabmessungen festgelegt sind. Im Rahmen einer Gütesicherung, bestehend aus Erst- und Kontrollprüfungen, sind weiters Anforderungen an den Werkstoff und den Oberflächenschutz, an die Bauweise, die Bedienbarkeit und das hygienische Verhalten gestellt, deren Erfüllungdurch entsprechende Prüfungen nachzuweisen ist. Nachdem die Hydranten meist im Bereich von Verkehrsflächen aufgestellt sind, ist für deren Gebrauchstauglichkeit auch die Standsicherheit und die Dichtheit der Hauptabsperrung im Falle einer mechanischen Beschädigung von großer Bedeutung; entsprechende Festlegungen wurden ebenfalls getroffen.
