Für die Klassifizierung bzw. Zuordnung von Gasen und Gasgemischen werden zwei Prüfmethoden beschrieben. Bei der ersten Methode wird festgestellt, ob ein Gas oder Gasgemisch mit Luft brennbar ist; mit der zweiten Methode wird festgestellt, ob sich ein Gas oder Gasgemisch mehr oder weniger oxidierend wie Luft verhält. Für Gasgemische, die in kleinen Mengen für besondere Zwecke hergestellt werden, ist alternativ eine Berechnungsmethode angeführt und an Beispielen erklärt. In einer Tabelle ist der maximale Gehalt an brennbaren Gasen - für verschiedene Gase oder Gasgemische - aufgelistet, der im Gemisch mit Stickstoff an der Luft nicht brennbar ist. Die Prüfanforderungen sind in Bildern dargestellt. Im Anhang ist die untere Explosionsgrenze reiner Gase in Luft angegeben.
