In Europa gibt es eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Regeln für die visuelle Sortierung von Bauholz nach seiner Festigkeit. Infolge der Unterschiede zwischen den in den einzelnen Ländern geltenden Regeln hält man es im CEN/TC124 gegenwärtig nicht für möglich, für alle CEN-Mitgliedsländer ein einziges Regelwerk zu schaffen. EN 518 soll daher lediglich Grundlagen festlegen, nach denen Regeln für die visuelle Festigkeitssortierung aufzustellen sind. Die wichtigsten Forderungen an solche Regeln sind: - Sie sollten eine wirklich eindeutige Sorteneinteilung ermöglichen, und - sie sollten so leicht verständlich sein, daß sie von den in den Sägewerke tätigen Sortierern ohne Schwierigkeiten befolgt werden können.
