Die in der Parallelnorm ÖNORM A 1610-12 festgelegten Anforderungen an die verschiedenen Oberflächen von Möbeln werden anhand dieser ÖNORM geprüft und beurteilt. Ein Teil dieser Prüfungen ist auch in DIN 68861 beschrieben; für diese Prüfungen wurden aus Gründen der besseren Vergleichbarkeit die DIN-Prüfungsnummern beibehalten. Als Möbeloberfläche im Sinne dieser ÖNORM gilt jede Oberfläche eines fertigen Möbels, ob unbehandelt, gebeizt, gebleicht, gefärbt, bedruckt, mit aufgeleimten oder aufgepreßten Überzügen (Furniere, Papiere, Folien, Kunststoffplatten, Schichtpreßstoffplatten u.a.) beschichtet und/oder mit flüssigen Mitteln (Ölen, Lacken, Polituren ua.) behandelt. Dazu gehören auchpulverbeschichtete und galvanisch behandelte Oberflächen.
