Die Norm gilt für Anforderungen und Prüfverfahren von werksseitig aufgebrachte extrudierten und aufgeschmolzenen Polyethylen-Umhüllungen für in Böden und Wässern verlegte Stahlrohre. Sie können in der Normalausführung N bei Dauerbetriebstemperaturen bis 50 Grad Celsius oder in der Sonderausführung S bis 70 Grad Celsius sowie mit normaler (n) oder verstärkter (v) Schichtdicke mit den Maßen nach DIN 2448 bzw. DIN 2458 eingesetzt werden. Sie dient der Gütesicherung der Umhüllungsqualität. Stahlrohre im Sinne der Norm sind auch Leitungsteile, die aus Stahlrohren hergestellt sind (Formstücke).
