Artificial intelligence

AI, standards and developments of tomorrow

Artificial intelligence (AI) has massively increased in importance over the last few years. The applications are wide-ranging and the development of companies will change significantly over the next few years thanks to AI.

Information technology – Artificial intelligence – Artificial intelligence concepts and terminology

ISO/IEC TR 24028:2020

Information technology – Artificial intelligence – Overview of trustworthiness in artificial intelligence

Why are standards needed for AI?

Standards in the field of AI are intended to promote responsible use and innovations and to boost trust. The EU's AI Act creates a standardised risk-based framework for the secure and responsible use of AI. Standards play a key role here.

Consistency and interoperability create a common basis and make cooperation between various AI systems easier.

Standards set out requirements, for example with regard to the transparency, robustness and accuracy of AI systems, in order that they are reliable, secure and ethical.

Our experts take part in European and international standardisation work in order that national Austrian interests can also be taken into consideration in international standards.

Insights into the committee's work

Three questions for committee manager Jörg Nachbaur

Standards for artificial intelligence (AI) are of utmost importance for organising the AI landscape and establishing a clear, secure and trustworthy framework for action. Standardisation of AI aims to boost safety, set out clear guidelines and optimise the use of AI in various areas of application.

When it comes to standardisation, in-depth work is being carried out on the safety and regulation of artificial intelligence. Some topics which are currently under development include quality requirements, reliability, management systems, management of AI risks, competency requirements for AI ethics and environmental compatibility of AI.

Trust in AI systems is being established by means of the European legal framework and the supporting standards for implementation. Trust is the basis for any business relationship and it will help to expand Europe's leading technical role in the field of artificial intelligence.

Help shape AI standards

The topic of artificial intelligence is dealt with in Working Group 001 42 "Artificial intelligence" in Committee 001 "Information technology" at Austrian Standards.
