Dieser Teil der IEC 383 gilt für Isolatoren aus keramischem Werkstoff oder Glas zur Verwendung in Wechselstrom-Frei- und -Fahrleitungen mit einer Nennspannung über 1000 V und einer Frequenz nicht größer als 100 Hz. Er gilt auch für Isolatoren zur Verwendung in Gleichstrom-Freileitungen elektrischer Fahrleitungen. Dieser Teil gilt für Kettenisolatoren, starr montierte Freileitungsisolatoren sowie für Isolatoren ähnlicher Bauart, wenn diese in Unterstationen verwendet werden.
