Die ÖNORM ist hinsichtlich Brandschutz und Brandbekämpfung in den Bereichen Medizin, Technik und Forschung bei der Planung und Errichtung von Strahlenanwendungsräumen für umschlossene radioaktive Stoffe, Räumen mit Arbeitsplätzen der Type A oder B gemäß Strahlenschutzverordnung und Abfalllager-, Abkling- und Manipulationsräumen für radioaktive Abfälle im Sinne der ÖNORM S 2601 anzuwenden. An Räume mit Arbeitsplätzen der Type C werden keine Anforderungen im Sinne dieser ÖNORM gestellt. Diese ÖNORM gilt nicht für den Umgang mit radioaktiven Stoffen für den nuklearen Brennstoff-Kreislauf und für Strahlenanwendungsräume zur zerstörungsfreien Werkstoffprüfung.
