Diese ÖNORM enthält Richtlinien für die ökologische Untersuchung und die Bewertung des Zustandes von stehenden Gewässern im Sinne der Vorgaben des österreichischen Wasserrechtsgesetzes 1959, des Hydrographiegesetzes sowie der EU-Wasserrahmenrichtlinie. Weiters werden gewässerspezifische Fragestellungen des ökosystemaren Naturschutzansatzes in den einzelnen Landes-Naturschutzgesetzen behandelt. Diese ÖNORM ist als Richtlinie für Untersuchungen aufzufassen, deren Ziel es ist, eine Bewertung des Zustandes von stehenden Gewässern und ihres Tier- und Pflanzenbestandes nach ökologischen Gesichtspunkten in Zusammenhang mit Wasserwirtschaft, Gewässerüberwachung, Gewässerschutz, Gewässersanierung und Gewässern als Landschaftselement vorzunehmen.
