Diese Norm gibt eine Methode zur Bestimmung der Eindruckhärte von Kunststoffen und Hartgummi durch zwei Typen von Durometern an: Durometer Typ A wird für weichere Materialien verwendet, Durometer Typ B für härtere Materialien. Die Methode erlaubt entweder die Messung des Anfangseindrucks oder des Eindrucks nach einer vorgeschriebenen Zeitspanne oder beides. Diese Methode ist eine in erster Linie für Kontrollzwecke vorgesehene empirische Prüfung. Es besteht keine einfache Beziehung zwischen der durch diese Methode bestimmten Eindruckhärte und irgendeiner grundlegenden Eigenschaft des geprüften Materials. Zu Spezifikationszwecken wird vorgeschlagen, für die weicheren Materialien ISO 48 "Vulkanisierter Gummi - Bestimmung der Härte (Härte zwischen 30 und 85 IRHD)" anzuwenden.
