Diese Europäische Norm legt die Eigenschaften von Linoleum mit und ohne Muster fest, das entweder in Form von Platten oder auch als Rollen geliefert wird. Um den Verbraucher bei seiner Auswahl zu unterstützen, enthält diese Norm ein Klassifizierungssystem (siehe EN 685) auf Basis der Nutzungsintensität, das zeigt, wo für diese Bodenbeläge ein zufriedenstellender Nutzen möglich wäre. Die Norm legt auch die Bedingungen zur Kennzeichnung fest. Der Begriff ¿Linoleum¿ wird häufig fälschlicherweise auch für andere Bodenbeläge, oft für solche auf Basis von Polyvinylchlorid oder Elastomeren, verwendet. Derartige Materialien sind nicht in dieses Dokument eingeschlossen.
