Die Einführung eines Shutters in der Steckdose dient dazu, die spannungsführenden Kontakte der Steckdose automatisch abzudecken, wenn der Stecker nicht eingeführt ist. Steckdosen gemäß dieser ÖNORM werden auch als "Kinderschutzsteckdosen" bezeichnet. Eine in der ÖNORM festgelegte Lehre dientdazu, die ausreichende Schutzwirkung des Shutters zu beurteilen. Es ist eine Normkennzeichnung der Lehre vorgesehen.
