ÖNORM B 3585-2

This standard specifies the following selected requirements for mastic asphalt for use in the construction of roads, airfields and other traffic surfaces, in accordance with ÖNORM EN 13108-6, ÖNORM EN 13108-20 and ÖNORM EN 13108-21, due to the special geographical, topographical and climatic conditions prevailing in Austria. This standard has to be applied together with these standards. In order to cover the load situation in Austria, different types of mixes are defined in terms of mix composition and aggregate requirements. This document implements the performance-oriented requirements of ÖNORM EN 13108-6. NOTE: In Austria, a distinction is made between empirical and performance-oriented asphalt mix requirements. The asphalt mixture is assessed according to one of these two concepts with different test methods. Asphalt mixture manufacturers are given more degrees of freedom when designing asphalt mixtures according to the performance-oriented approach. The asphalt mix is stressed in the laboratory tests in such a way that it best reflects the combination of traffic and climate. Project-specific conditions can therefore be taken into account. Asphalt mix concepts according to the performance-oriented approach are preferably used for highly loaded traffic areas (e.g. motorways, air traffic areas).
