Die Norm gehört zu einer Reihe von Normen, welche die Probenahme und die Prüfung von Beschichtungsstoffen behandeln. Die Norm legt ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Beständigkeit von Beschichtungen gegen künstliches Bewittern oder gegen künstliches Bestrahlen fest. Die Norm beschreibt die wichtigsten Einflußgrößen und legt die Bedingungen für Prüfungen in Geräten fest. Wenn die festgelegten Prüfbedingungen genau eingehalten werden, ergibt sich eine verbesserte Vergleichbarkeit und eine verbesserte Korrelation zwischen den Ergebnissen der Freibewitterung und der künstlichen Bewitterung.
